Terschelling is part of the province of Friesland (locally: Schylge, in Frisian: Skylge). To the west of the island lies the island of Vlieland, to the east the island of Ameland. Terschelling is roughly 30 kilometres long. 80% of the island consists of nature area, it has some 70 kilometres of cycle paths and there are a number of villages. The ferries arrive in the main village on the east of the island, West-Terschelling (locally: West, in Frisian: West-Skylge). Here, the famous Brandaris lighthouse is located, that has watched over the island since 1594. Midsland (locally: Meslôns, in Frisian: Midslân) is the second largest village on the island, and it has a friendly centre. On Terschelling, you can hike and cycle to your heart’s content in a variety of natural sceneries (forst, dunes, beaches, etc.) throughout the year. There is also a wealth of culture and history: the local museums are well worth a visit. During the Summer, the island comes alive in the many events that are being organized, for instance the Oerol festival (Oerol means ‘Everywhere’).In the villages, there are shops and pubs that will make your stay a pleasant one.
